Mom and Quackers the Duck found in the Union Miners Cemetery geocache
We followed Old 66 through several small towns (and passed an old man's home where he had set up a little monument to RT 66 including a log book which he yelled for me to sign when I got out of the car to take a picture) including Mitchell, home of the Luna Cafe. Luna apparently had quite the colorful history, including gambling, Al Capone and 'ladies of the night.' Now the only thing cool about it is the original neon sign, inside it's just a typical dive bar full of local good ol' boys getting their Sunday afternoon beer buzz.
In its heyday (of impropriety) the cherry was lit up to signal the presence of women of ill repute
We listened to John Hiatt's "Crossing Muddy Waters" while crossing the Might Mississippi and, hooray! we were finally in a state other than Illinois! Halfway through day 3! With the help from (and sometime in spite of) our trusty EZ 66 Guide, we successfully navigated St. Louis.
Our only stop in St. Louis was to Ted Drewe's for frozen custard. There we met up with mom's friends Jean and Dave who live just down the street from Ted Drewe's. We chatted over our custard while standing in the hot sun on the asphalt parking lot. Good idea. But it was nice to chat for a while. Soon we said goodbye and headed out of town- but not before stopping for yet another giant alert!
Thanks for the frozen treats Jean and Dave!
So we went a little further and ended up in Sullivan, MO. Exhaustion had set in about 40 miles earlier so we decided to order pizza and not go out. It was a good plan. Then we had a refreshing swim in the hotel pool to finish off our day. Tomorrow we're off to the second Springfield of our trip.
Until we meet again, C
All is sounding good, even the heat. Not the HOT seat Suzie was in though LMAO. It's been rainy, damp & cold here, so enjoy the warm weather. Suzie, use the AC as needed for those flashes.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to the next update,

Forgot to mention 'Quackers the Duck', the Cache Buddy we picked up in the cemetery. He started on the road in N. Carolina, traveled to 80 different caches in Georgia, then landed in the Mother Jones cache in Mt. Olive, Illinois. We're taking him to the end of the road with us for a cache in California. He's a cute, little companion for our journey!
ReplyDeleteMother Jones was quite a character. Active with the UMW, she frequently led strikers in picketing and encouraged the striking workers to stay on strike when the management brought in strike-breakers and militias. West Virginia district attorney, Reese Blizzard, in 1902, said at her trial for ignoring an injunction banning meetings by striking miners. "There sits the most dangerous woman in America". "She crooks her finger—twenty thousand contented men lay down. She is buried in the Union Miners Cemetery in Mount Olive, Illinois, alongside miners who died in the Battle of Virden in 1898. She called these miners, killed in strike-related violence, "her boys." Mother Jones Magazine is still going strong
ReplyDeleteI'm enjoying the journey! Is Quackers the Duck an actual travel bug? Are you logging in your finds? How many giants so far? Did steam come off your butt when you took your refreshing swim? Just a few questions . . . Stay the path (road). Namaste.

Yes, Quackers is a "trackable" and we've logged him on geocaching.com along with our other caches. As for the giants, there were 3 "Gemini Giants" (the ones holding a rocket, hot dog and flag, respectively)but there have been plenty of other giant things along the way including, but not limited to, a bowling pin, a covered wagon, a rocking chair and a whale. All in all we've had 13 GIANT ALERTS!
DeleteLove me some pkg goods!
ReplyDeleteAlso, ain't nothin' mediocre about Nick Lachey!
